Women's Basketball Captures Southern Conference Championship

The Palm Beach State College Women's Basketball team are the 2020 Southern Conference champions.

With an 86-35 defeat of ASA College on Wednesday night, the Panthers have successfully clinched the #1 seed in the Southern Conference and will be heading to the state tournament for the first time since the 2016-2017 season.

Coach Maureen Smith, in her third year as head coach of the Panthers, earns her first Conference Championship at the college and fifth overall.

The Panthers currently have the best conference record in the state of Florida, amassing nine wins and only one loss. Their 17 wins is the program's highest winning percentage in the last four years.

For the second season in a row, PBSC will send a basketball team to the state tournament. The Panthers will travel to Niceville, FL on the campus of Northwest Florida State College, to compete against the Mid-Florida Conference's #2 seeded team. The state tournament will occur March 4-7.

The Panthers' 51-point victory overshadowed the fact that five players scored 10 points or more including Angela Denis who tallied a double-double, scoring 12 points and a whopping 19 rebounds.

The team got out to a hot start, holding the Silver Storm scoreless in the first quarter of play. They would not let off the gas just yet, scoring an additional 29 points in the 2nd quarter to put the halftime score at 55-12. With the game largely out of hand, PBSC was able to go on cruise control the rest of the way.

Freshman Izzy Allen and Sophomore Alma Danielsson nearly chipped in with double-doubles of their own tallying 12 points and 7 rebounds apiece. Sophomores Amaya Small and Stina Rehn-Andersson recorded 10 points and 7 rebounds & 11 points and 4 rebounds, respectively.

Both the Men and Women will travel to Broward College on Saturday with only two regular season games left on the schedule for each team. The women will play at 2:00 pm and the men will play at 4:00 pm. On Tuesday, the teams will return home for the final regular season game of the year when they face off against Miami Dade College starting at 5:30 pm. Prior to Tuesday's games, we will honor our sophomore Panthers as they play what will be their final home game wearing a Palm Beach State uniform.
