Bio

Maureen Smith recently completed her third season as head coach for Palm Beach State Women's Basketball.

Coach Smith guided her team during the COVID shortened season in the Spring 2021 to a 7-12 win-loss record, including a win against top-25 nationally ranked Florida Southwestern, 70-66, on January 27, 2021.

During the 2019-2020 season, Coach Smith guided the team to a 19-11 win-loss record, which included an 11-1 record within the Southern Conference. Additionally, the Panthers captured a Southern Conference Championship and earned a trip to the FCSAA Tournament for the first time in over six years. She helped guide Alma Danielsson & Izzy Allen to 1st Team All-Conference selections; as well as four 2nd Team All-Conference selections in Maria Benitez-Zayas, Caleese Ramirez, Stina Rehn-Andersson, and Amaya Small. For her efforts, Coach Smith was named the Southern Conference Coach of the Year as selected by her peers.

In her first season as head coach, Coach Smith led the Panthers a 9-20 record, but amassed a 5-6 conference record, which was 3rd-best in the conference. Additionally, Coach Smith produced three 1st team All-Conference players in Maria Benitez-Zayas, Alma Danielsson, and Chrystal Pressley; as well as two 2nd team All-Conference players in Angela Denis and Jadin Gladden.

Smith comes to Palm Beach State after recently being the assistant varsity head coach at University High School and assistant golf coach at Seminole State College, where they finished 2nd in the nation during the 2016-17 season.

Prior to Seminole State, Smith was the head women's basketball coach at East Stroudsburg University.  While at East Stroudsburg, Smith led the Warriors to their first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Tournament appearance in four years (2012-13) and first winning record in six seasons (2013-14).  Smith recruited five All-Conference student-athletes and one Freshmen of the Year.

While at Seminole State, Smith led the Raiders to a Mid-Florida Conference Championship and a runner-up finish in the NJCAA Region 8 State tournament. Smith's former players went on to play at University of Florida, University of Alabama, Florida Atlantic University, and Clayton State to name a few. 100% of Smith's student-athletes while at Seminole State went on to 4-year colleges and universities.

Smith previously held assistant coach positions at Oakland University, University of Central Florida, Bradley University, Southern Illinois University and Elmhurst College.

Smith was a two-year starter during her college career at Florida International University, who won the Trans America Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championships and played in the Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT) during her senior year in 1991-92. She transferred to FIU after two years at Broward Community College, where she was a 2-year starter and 1990 Florida Junior College All-Star.

Smith holds a bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing degree from Florida International in 1992. She also earned an associate of Arts in Business Administration degree from Broward College in 1990, along with her Master’s degree in Sport Management from ESU.

Coach Smith resides in Boynton Beach with her husband Chris and dog Kona.
